THE FIELD GUIDE
Felt Quality Index
Not all felt is created equal. Understanding what goes into your hat helps you choose something that will last — and feel — exactly the way it should.
BUDGET FRIENDLY
Wool
Most affordable and great for fashion hats, but rough to the touch, low durability, very little weather resistance, and easily misshaped.
MID RANGE
Rabbit
Softer than wool, made from rabbit under-fur. Good water resistance, comfortable wear, good shape retention, many color options, and mid-range cost. Not as durable as beaver.
HIGH QUALITY
Blends (Beaver/Rabbit)
A more affordable option without compromising too much quality or performance. Great for daily wear — durable, weather resistant, and can be reshaped. Note: the percentage can vary, so always ask about material composition.
TOP QUALITY
Nutria
Very similar to Beaver in characteristics and quality — naturally water-resistant, durable, smooth finish. Less widely known, harder to find, and high priced.
TOP QUALITY
Beaver
Heirloom quality that will last for generations. Naturally water-resistant, exceptionally durable, excellent shape retention, can easily be reshaped, smooth finish, and lightweight. High priced with limited quantity and color options.
